Virtuemart eCommerce Bundle: Warning!

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

I just spent some time on the Virtuemart eCommerce bundle.

Do not use it!

The Virtuemart version is 1.1.2, not 1.1.3. Just install Joomla 1.5.9 as usual, and then install Virtuemart as usual.

What surprises me is that the JA-Larix theme looks incomplete. I don’t know how it is that there are no threads in the VM forum –nor my own forum — asking why the JA-Larix theme is producing errors.  Well, it should because there are entire folders within it that are missing.

There is another problem. If you upgrade your “eCommerce” Virtuemart from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3, you then have to upgrade your JA-Larix theme as well (assuming you are using it).  However, there is no JA-Larix theme for VM 1.1.3.

So you are faced with the decision to either upgrade JA-Larix theme files yourself, stay with VM 1.1.2, or change themes.

Remember that  you have to  upgrade your themes with each VM upgrade!

You are much better off not installing the VM eComm bundle.

UPDATE: The JA site’s JA-Larix is updated to VM 1.1.2 only.

osCommerce vs. Joomla with Virtuemart: Pros and Cons

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

osCommerce and Joomla with Virtuemart are both easy to administrate from each others’ respective admin interfaces.

osCommerce comes close in functionality, but from the developer’s perspective, the code could really benefit from a reorganization and some general TLC. Better comments, cleaner code layout, and a more thought out class structure would definitely boost osCommerce’s standing among developers.

If Joomla continues to grow as (probably) the best web CMS out there, Virtuemart could give osCommerce a run for its money. Having the advantage of being fully integrated into a very rich CMS, managing Virtuemart becomes almost trivial.

Joomla with Virtuemart Pros:

  • Fast and easy installation and configuration.
  • Easy to customize and extend.
  • Shopper groups (vendors, guests, whatever your heart desires. Product prices and descriptions can vary from group to group).
  • Small codebase, easy to develop for. (it’s just a Joomla module)
  • Easy to administrate.

osCommerce Pros:

  • Fast and easy installation and configuration.
  • Vetted. Though still a development release, it is widely popular and thus has a larger support base.
  • Lots of plug-ins. Chances are, any feature you need, has already been written by someone else.
  • Supports most e-commerce standard features out-of-box.

Joomla with Virtuemart Cons:

  • Still quite a bit on the CVS to-do list. (some functionality could require development if needed immediately)
  • Not stand-alone. Requires Joomla to function.
  • Must learn Joomla framework (or at least how to write Joomla modules and templates) to develop custom functionality.

osCommerce Cons:

  • Large and overly complex code base. Difficult to extend or modify.

In summary, both products support alot of the same features:

Customizable products, carts, shopper account administration, reports, etc…

Joomla with Virtuemart definitely benefits over osCommerce when it comes to extensibility. If you are familiar with Joomla’s framework and templating system, then the sky’s the limit when it comes to extending virtuemart. osCommerce, while certainly popular, is difficult for the developer wade through, lacking meaningful comments and a having a code structure that is haphazard at best.

Contracting with Sankuru.biz - The Joomla/Virtuemart technology ecosystem

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

2.1. Hardware

At the basis, there is the hardware. It is never a bad idea to understand how the hardware of typical, contemporary computer systems works. A good understanding of the Von Neumann architecture, and its contemporary implementation in terms of CPU, memory, disk space and other typical devices will invariably end up proving useful.

2.2. The Kernel

Between the applications and the hardware sits the custodian of shared resources, the kernel. Every operation that lays claim on shared resources, such as memory or hardware devices, ends up in a series of system calls to the kernel. These calls are usually routed through the system libraries, of which the most important is the libc.

Understanding of kernel space versus user space is important background knowledge. Architectural understanding of the Linux system environment, the shell (Bash), the command line tools, and the C language will invariably end up proving useful.

2.3. The LAMP stack

Linux, Apache, MySQL, Php, that is, the LAMP stack, is currently the dominant technology on the web server side of things. These technologies are the foundation for the Joomla/Virtuemart server side technology pack. It is not possible to do useful Joomla/Virtuemart work without a sound understanding of the LAMP stack.

2.4. HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ajax

The days of rich desk desktop clients are mostly over. Whenever possible, the market will favour applications that — on the client side — run in the browser, to applications that run directly on the client Operating System (OS).  Joomla/Virtuemart web user interfaces are eventually built on the foundation technologies: HTML, CSS, Javascript, and increasingly on asynchronous javascript remoting, Ajax.

2.5. Joomla

Joomla (http://joomla.org) is a CMS, based on the LAMP stack. To an important extent, your job will consist in installing, configuring, customizing and extending Joomla. You need to be able to figure out the standard Joomla application and library source code.

2.6. Virtuemart

Virtuemart (http://virtuemart.net) is a webshop — aka, e-commerce infrastructure technology — that installs as a Joomla extension (”component”). Read as much as you can on how to use and how to configure it. To an important extent, your job will consist in installing, configuring, customizing and extending Virtuemart. You need to be able to figure out the standard Virtuemart application and library source code.

The entire stack of technology bricks in our e-commerce framework is completely open source. From the lowest device driver in the kernel up to the most specialized credit card processing plugin in Virtuemart, the complete source code is available and can be fixed. There are no excuses valid such as “This is a problem with such and such library. We cannot fix it.” Wrong. We can always fix it.

Joomla VirtueMart

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

This tutorial will show you how to install the VirtueMart component to your Joomla website. We recommend you to create a backup of your website before you proceed with the installation.

How to install VirtueMart

To install VirtueMart on an existing Joomla website, you need to install the core Virtuemart component and module. The installation steps are easy and intuitive.

First, go to www.virtuemart.net and download the complete package of the shopping cart, called VirtueMart_x.x_COMPLETE_PACKAGE.zip.

Next, extract this file on your local hard drive, to find the actual components and modules. Then go to your Joomla Administrator panel and navigate to Installers -> Components.

The first thing to be installed is the com_virtuemart.x.x.tar.gz file. Click on the [Browse...] button, select the file and hit [Upload File & Install].

The installation of the core element of VirtueMart is now complete.

Now, a module has to be installed, to make the functionality of VirtueMart accessible on your site. The procedure is quite similar to the installing of a component, described above. Please, go to Installers -> Modules, browse for the file called mod_virtuemart.x.x.tar.gz and click on [Upload File & Install].

Congratulations! You are now ready to use VirtueMart on your Joomla site!

In Joomla Administrator, go to Components -> VirtueMart and click on the [Go directly to Store] button. DO NOT interrupt this step - it may take a while as some time consuming SQL queries have to be executed. Please check the official installation instructions described in the installation.pdf file included in the main package.

There are additional modules and mambots that can enhance the performance and features of your website. These are very well covered in the documentation as well, and are also contained in the complete package archive you have downloaded.

If you experience problems with the installation of VirtueMart, do not hesitate to contact your SiteGround support team. With your SiteGround Hosting account you get Free and Professional Joomla Installation, and an affordable VirtueMart integration.
